Career Path

Recently I was part of a group conversation which discussed how to make Microsoft a better company. Every year Microsoft make surveys for its employes, where employees let the upper management know what do they think about their working environment.

One of the questions that we discussed was "Can your long term career goals be met at Microsoft". The group sort of split into two camps.

One side was saying something like Microsoft is involved in every technological sector and its a world wide leader in many of them. Surely every individual can reach his or her full potential at this great company. There are so many projects and Microsoft is the best place to learn and create any new technology that one can imagine.

Another side was saying: yes, all of the above is true. However, Microsoft is a huge corporation and people may have goals that Microsoft cant meet. For example, if one wants to become a Vice President of a product line, at Microsoft its possible, however, you would have to compete with the best of the best in the world for this position. While maybe in another smaller newer start-up company, you would be able to rise up much quicker, given that the company is successful.

Something to think about when choosing career paths in technology field.
